RBT Renewal Application: What to Complete Before You Submit
An RBT renewal application is the BACB recertification application used to maintain an existing RBT certification. Before you begin, identify the certification cycle shown in your BACB portal, confirm whether the 2026 transition rules apply to you, and gather the current recertification competency assessment and supporting records.
This checklist is an independent preparation guide. The current BACB RBT Handbook, your portal account, and BACB’s current processing instructions control the actual application decision.
RBT renewal application: the short answer
Complete the current RBT Recertification Competency Assessment, submit the recertification application through the BACB portal account associated with your certification, report the required supervision and ethics information accurately, and pay the applicable fee. The timing depends on your certification cycle.
For the 2026 transition, certificants who recertify during the applicable transition period complete the current maintenance requirements one last time before the two-year cycle begins. Beginning in 2027, the handbook describes recertification every two years and 12 professional-development units during each two-year cycle.
Identify the correct renewal cycle
Do not rely on an old blog post that says every RBT renews annually. Open your BACB portal and confirm your certification expiration or recertification date. The current handbook separates:
- Recertification through December 31, 2026: the transition rules describe one final set of current maintenance requirements before the two-year cycle begins after recertification.
- Recertification after January 1, 2027: the handbook describes a two-year cycle with professional-development requirements and a recertification application due by the recertification date.
Your portal date is more useful than a generic calendar. Record the date, the current packet version, and the date on which you reviewed the Handbook before gathering documents.

Complete the recertification competency assessment
The recertification competency assessment is a maintenance requirement. It is not the initial competency assessment used for a first certification application. Use the current RBT Recertification Competency Assessment Packet and work with the qualified assessor required by the current BACB process.
The current Handbook states that the assessment must be completed no more than 45 days before the expiration or recertification date. Do not complete it too early just because you have time available. The date window is part of the application checklist.
Before you submit, confirm:
- the packet is the current recertification packet;
- the assessment date falls within the applicable 45-day window;
- the assessor completed the required fields and signatures; and
- the uploaded file is readable and matches the name in your BACB portal account.
Review supervision, ethics, and professional development separately
The renewal application asks you to report information about your certification maintenance. Treat each requirement as its own check instead of assuming that one activity satisfies everything.
Ongoing supervision
Review your supervision records for the cycle and answer the portal questions truthfully. The current Handbook distinguishes client-focused ongoing supervision from professional development. One event should not automatically be counted for both.
Ethics and self-reporting
Read the application questions carefully. If a question requires an additional ethics or self-reporting statement, follow the official instructions and keep a copy of what you submitted. An article cannot decide whether an individual event must be disclosed.
Professional development
For the two-year cycle, the Handbook describes 12 professional-development units. Keep the supporting documentation for each activity and enter information as shown on the documentation. Ongoing supervision, client-specific training, and other excluded activities should not be assumed to count as PDU credit.
Prepare the application documents
Use the existing BACB portal account associated with your RBT certification. The current Handbook warns that creating a new account does not replace the account through which the certification is maintained.
Prepare a renewal folder containing:
- the current recertification competency assessment;
- supervision records or information needed to answer the application questions;
- professional-development documentation, when the applicable cycle requires it;
- any ethics or self-reporting statement requested by the portal; and
- payment information and a note of the current fee shown by BACB.
Use the same legal name and identifying information throughout the portal and uploaded documents. If your name or contact information changed, follow the current BACB account-update process before submitting.

Submit through the BACB portal
After the competency assessment and other applicable maintenance items are ready, log in to the existing BACB portal account, open the Applications area, and select the recertification application when it is available for your cycle. Follow the current prompts rather than copying steps from an older screenshot.
Before payment, review:
- the application date and certification date;
- the uploaded packet and its version;
- supervision and ethics answers;
- PDU entries and supporting documents, if applicable;
- the fee and any late fee displayed by BACB; and
- the confirmation page or email after submission.
Check the BACB Application Processing Updates page for current processing information. Do not convert a dynamic update into a guaranteed approval timeline.
What to do if the portal shows an Action Item
Read the determination email and the Action Items widget in the same BACB portal account. Follow the requested correction, upload the document through the instructed workflow, and save a copy of the correction and submission date.
If you disagree with an application determination, use the current BACB administrative-appeal instructions to determine whether an appeal applies. Do not use an appeal request simply to ask for a general explanation when the portal already identifies the missing or incorrect item.
Inactive, reinstatement, and expired are different
Missing the recertification date does not create a harmless grace period in which you can keep practicing. The current Handbook distinguishes several certification states:
| Status | What it means for the checklist | Practice boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Active | The applicable maintenance and recertification requirements are current | Follow the ongoing supervision and ethics requirements |
| Inactive during reinstatement | The recertification deadline was missed, but the stated reinstatement period may still be available | Do not practice, bill, or represent yourself as an active RBT |
| Expired | The reinstatement period ended without an approvable application | Stop using the RBT certification and follow the current reapplication requirements |
| Voluntary inactive | A separate status requested through the BACB process within the applicable cycle | Do not practice, bill, or represent yourself as active while inactive |
The exact remedy depends on your record and the current BACB rules. If the portal shows inactive or expired, do not continue services based on a third-party checklist. Confirm the status and next step through BACB’s official process.
Common RBT renewal application mistakes
- Using the initial competency packet. Recertification uses the current recertification packet.
- Completing the assessment too early. Check the 45-day timing window.
- Mixing supervision and PDU credit. They are separate maintenance requirements.
- Creating a new portal account. Use the account associated with the existing certification.
- Copying old annual-renewal advice. Confirm the transition and two-year-cycle rules that apply to your date.
- Working while inactive. Inactive status does not preserve permission to practice or bill as active.
Frequently asked questions
Does every RBT renew every year?
No. The current Handbook describes a 2026 transition and a two-year recertification cycle beginning in 2027. Check the date and cycle shown in your BACB portal.
How far before expiration should I complete the competency assessment?
The current Handbook states that the recertification competency assessment must be completed no more than 45 days before the expiration or recertification date. Confirm the current packet and date window before completing it.
Can ongoing supervision count as my PDU?
Do not assume it can. The Handbook distinguishes ongoing supervision from professional development and states that the requirements should not be automatically combined.
What happens if I miss the renewal date?
The certification may become inactive. The Handbook describes a 30-day reinstatement period with a late fee, and it states that you may not practice, bill, or represent yourself as active while inactive. If the period ends, the certification may expire and current reapplication requirements may apply.
Can I create a new BACB account for renewal?
Use the existing portal account associated with your certification. Creating a new account does not replace the account through which recertification is completed.
Does this checklist promise recertification?
No. BACB makes the application determination under the current requirements. Use this article to organize preparation, then follow the current portal and official BACB instructions.
