An rbt examination appeal is designed for an examination-condition irregularity, not for arguing with a score, a question, or the existence of an exam rule. The current BACB administrative-appeals guidance gives candidates a short window: a written request must be filed within 7 days of the examination appointment using the official Administrative Appeal Request Form. The first step is to separate a reportable testing condition from an ordinary exam result.

RBT Examination Appeal: What to Do After a Testing Problem

Separate appealable testing-condition irregularities from exam-score, content, and rule disputes—and protect the short filing deadline.

This guide explains the public process and preparation logic. The current BACB form, notice, and account instructions control a live request.

What an RBT examination appeal is

The BACB offers administrative appeals for certain application, examination, and compassionate matters. An examination appeal addresses an irregularity in the conditions under which the exam was delivered. The question is whether an unusual condition may have affected the testing experience—not whether a candidate would prefer a different result.

Examples listed by BACB include poor lighting, disruptive noises, or long screen-load times. The example must be described as an event tied to the examination appointment. A general complaint about exam difficulty, a disagreement with a content area, or a request to review a specific question is a different issue and is outside the examination-appeal route.

When a testing problem may fit

Start with the condition and its timing. Ask what happened, when it happened, how long it lasted, what part of the testing experience it affected, and whether it was reported to testing-center staff or the administrator at the time. A clear account uses observable details rather than a conclusion such as “the test was unfair.”

Possible examples include a persistent environmental disruption, a significant lighting or equipment problem, or a technical delay that materially interrupted the appointment. BACB also notes that Pearson VUE delivers examinations through a web browser, so minor internet-bandwidth variation is expected. A short page load or ordinary inconvenience is not automatically an appealable irregularity.

The appeal question starts with a testing-condition problem, not a disagreement with the exam result.

What cannot be appealed

The BACB’s current guidance says that standards, requirements, deadlines, procedures, fees, examination content, examination edition, delivery modality, examination results, and examination-specific questions or answers may not be appealed. That boundary matters because sending the wrong type of request can waste the seven-day window and expose protected exam information.

Do not copy exam questions, describe confidential content, or ask a training provider to argue that an answer key should change. If the concern is preparation, eligibility, an accommodation, a scheduling issue, or a certification application, use the resource and process that matches that problem. An examination appeal is not a general customer-service complaint.

The 7-day response workflow

  1. Record the test date and appointment details. Write down the date, location or delivery setting, approximate time, and the condition while the memory is fresh.
  2. Describe the event neutrally. State what occurred, how long it lasted, what you did, and whether staff were notified. Avoid speculation about the final score.
  3. Check the deadline. The written examination appeal request must be filed within 7 days of the examination appointment. Do not wait for a supervisor or provider to draft the request if the deadline is approaching.
  4. Use the official form. Complete the Administrative Appeal Request Form and select the examination-appeal option. The request is submitted by the applicant or certificant, not by a supervisor on their behalf.
  5. Attach appropriate support. Include accurate documentation that explains the condition without reproducing protected exam content. Keep copies of the submission and confirmation.

Evidence and writing tips

A useful appeal is specific, chronological, and limited to the event. Include the appointment date, the testing condition, approximate duration, how it interrupted the appointment, whether staff responded, and what supporting documentation exists. If a document includes unrelated personal information, redact it when the official instructions allow.

Use first-hand facts. “A loud recurring alarm continued while I was testing and I reported it to staff” is stronger than “the center wanted me to fail.” Do not exaggerate, guess what happened behind the scenes, or submit a screenshot containing exam questions. An appeal is a formal statement; accuracy matters.

What to do immediately after the appointment

If a serious irregularity occurs, note it before the details fade. Write the sequence in your own words, keep the appointment confirmation, and record whether you told testing-center staff or the administrator. If a staff member gave you an incident number or explanation, preserve that information. Do not record prohibited testing content or ask another candidate to recreate the exam.

Then compare the concern with the official appeal categories. A testing-site condition, a technical interruption, an accommodation concern, and a scheduling or registration problem may use different routes. If you are unsure, read the current BACB page or contact the official support route promptly, but do not let an informal question delay a request that may have a seven-day deadline.

After submitting

Save the submitted form, attachments, confirmation, and the email connected to the BACB account. Monitor that account for a request for more information or a determination. Processing time can vary, and the BACB does not promise a universal decision timeline. Do not submit a second appeal for the same event simply because the first review is still pending.

Only one type of administrative appeal may be requested for a specific matter or event. BACB states that appeal decisions are final and may not be further reviewed or appealed. Submitting more emails after a determination does not create a second examination appeal.

A request should therefore be treated as a time-limited administrative filing: identify the event, preserve the evidence, submit through the correct official form, and wait for the official determination without sharing protected content.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appeal because I failed the RBT examination?

Not simply because the result was unsuccessful. An examination appeal is for an eligible testing-condition irregularity, not a request to reconsider the score or examination content.

How long do I have to file?

The current BACB administrative-appeals guidance says to submit the written request within 7 days of the examination appointment. Verify the current form and instructions before filing.

Can my supervisor submit the appeal for me?

No. BACB’s FAQ says the appeal request may be submitted by the applicant or certificant, not a supervisor or another person. A supervisor may help you understand your records, but the account holder submits the request.

Can I appeal an exam question or answer?

No. BACB states that examination content, questions, answers, results, requirements, deadlines, procedures, and fees may not be appealed.
